Our Spotlight Dog of the Week is Gemma! Read Her Story and Stay Tuned for Next Week! [PHOTOS]

This week’s Spotlight Dog comes with a very sad story and needs as much help as we can give her!

Gemma has a story that can’t easily be explained because only she knows the details from her terrible past. The Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue received a call from a company located in a high kill shelter area about an abandoned pit bull. Workers there were abusing her, by throwing things and hitting her. The LCPBR had been posting photos of her all day trying to get someone to reach out and save her.

Crystal Flowers, VP of LCPBR said, “We didn’t have space to keep her and without a foster, our rescue hands were tied. Where do we house her? Where will the funds come from? What can we cut back on? How can we make this happen on our own?” With all these unanswered questions they went out to where Gemma was to try and catch her. After a few rounds of running around and finally getting her to come close to them, they were able to leash her and load her up to take her to the vet.

Sadly, it turns out Gemma is in urgent need of veterinarian care. When she arrived to the vet, they found out she has an extreme ear infection. When the vet went to check her ears he couldn’t even see her eardrum because of the puss in her ear. She has severe nerve damage to her face and eye from the prolonged ear infection. This is what is causing the side of her face to cave in. After a night in the vets office it turned out she is heart worm negative, she also was fixed, put on antibiotics, and received an ear flush. As it turned out, Gemma was also microchipped several years ago. They contacted the company who said she was a stray from three years ago, they found her original owners that said they did not want her back.

This poor girl has had seven years of hard times but now is safe and can finally have a place to receive love and care. She won’t be available for adoption for a few months till she is healthier and has had a temperament test, this sweet girl shows the love an devotion of the LCPBR to these animals.

The rescue right now has a vet bill of $7,900 and can’t receive any vet care unless they pay for everything upfront until the bill is paid off. Even though they had no where for Gemma to go, no money to pay for her care, and no idea what would happen they still saved her. Thankfully, a sponsor has paid the start of Gemma’s bills and now she is resting comfortably.
