Nicki Minaj Defends Weird 2012 Grammy Performance [VIDEO]
If you are still scratching your heads over Nicki Minaj‘s bizarre Grammy performance on Sunday, don’t worry, you are not alone. The rapper visited Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Monday (Feb. 13) to defend her, um, odd performance.
Just to recap, the Young Money rapper debuted her new single ‘Roman Holiday’ onstage surrounded by dancing monks and a man dressed like the pope. As her male alter-ego Roman Zolanski, Minaj rapped like a demon possessed, which may explain the outlandish exorcism that occurred onstage.
Fans reaction to Minaj’s show have been mixed. “Stevie Wonder was the luckiest man in the crowd at the Nicki Minaj performance,” wrote Kuban Sinatra. Actor Neil Patrick Harris loved what he saw and tweeted, “Nicki Minaj was outstanding. Levitations rule.”
During her interview with Seacrest (via WENN), Minaj insisted that her bizarre performance was a complete success and the Grammy producers begged her to bring it to stage. “It’s the most comfortable I have been on stage in my entire life,” she said. “Because, first of all, the Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday’ … And I could not play them another record after they heard that.”
As for the religious spectacle? “I had this vision for Roman … People around him tell him that he’s not good enough because he’s not normal and he’s not blending in with the average Joe,” she explains. “He wanted to show that not only is he amazing … and he’s confident, but he’s never gonna change, he’s never gonna be exorcised.”
Okay, whoever green-lighted that performance should be fired immediately. We’re only kidding. All jokes aside, we can’t be too mad at Minaj. She is an artist and we must allow her to be creative.
