Mariah Carey to be American Idol Judge, But Can She Beat Britney Spears on X Factor? — The RoundUp
Who do you think will win in an epic diva battle between Mariah Carey and Britney Spears? The show-runners at “The X Factor” and “American Idol” are surely wondering the same thing, as Mariah Carey was recently announced as taking a position as judge on American Idol, just two months before Britney Spears will begin in the same role on “The X Factor”.
At first it wouldn’t seem like Mariah Carey and Britney Spears have a lot in common. One is known for her five octave range, one is known for having a range significantly less than that. One is known for her amazing stage presence and captivating performances, while the other is known for standing behind a microphone and singing. Both are known for their chart topping hits, and much publicized breakdowns. That’s where the similarities end.
Of course they both have their strong suits. Mariah Carey will bring something to the table of judges that they never have before—legitimate singing talent. Sure they’ve had their Jennifer Lopez’s and Ellen DeGeneres’s, but they’ve never had a powerhouse vocalist who could literally blow all of the contestants off the stage by just humming a few bars. I think she’ll be able to offer contestants the kind of mentoring that has never been offered before—how to be a better technical singer.
Not that Spears is lacking in advice to give to singing hopefuls. Sure, she’s better known for her dance moves than her vocals, but let’s not discredit her. To many she is considered to be the best pop performer of her generation. Think of the things she’s done on stage! Dancing with a boa constrictor! Turning the VMA’S into a strip club! First base with Madonna! Even at her worst, her performances are talked about for years. She’s got a resume that makes lesser pop stars like Lady GaGa and Katy Perry cry themselves to sleep. She will be a fountain of inspiration and advice for singers who hope to bring even a tenth of the magic she brings to the stage.
Britney and Mariah are very different artists in terms of scope and sound, and experience. Their heydays may have come years apart, but they both have had years in the spotlight. Though, I think it’s obvious who is the more bankable star in this respect, Britney Spears. It all comes down to who is more likable, and Spears pretty much has it in the bag. Sure, the whispers of Mariah being the queen of divas doesn’t help, but really people just don’t seem to be that invested in her. Spears did a back handspring into the hearts of American’s a decade ago, and never left. Mariah has the pipes, but Britney is and always has been America’s sweetheart.
