American Mustache Institute

When someone grows a mustache, all of society benefits, since the visually pleasing facial hair is now on display for all to see. Yet the costs of maintaining a proper lip sweater falls only on the mustachioed individual.

The fine folks at the American Mustache Institute want to change this. So they recently proposed the “Stimulus To Allow Critical Hair Expenses,” or the STACHE ACT, which awards a $250 tax credit to every mustached American. They are also calling for a Million Mustache March in support of the act that will take place in Washington DC on April 1st. (Yup, always a bit suspicious.)

The AMI, who partnered with H&R Block on the proposal, even  drew up a white paper on why the STACHE act is necessary. Here is its summery:

In summary, the grooming habits of Mustached Americans are a clear example of financial, social and environmental responsibility—the triple bottom line. It is appropriate that Congress allow a limited number of deductions to people of Mustached American heritage in recognition of the value that their lifestyle provides to the economy, to society, and to the environment.

The 23rd season of ‘The Simpsons’ will go out with a bang, as that’s when the episode featuring Lady Gaga will air.

Gaga taped her ep late last summer and just like ‘SNL’ last May, she will appear on a season finale of a long-running comedy show. ‘The Simpsons’ remains the longest airing scripted show on prime time TV, while ‘SNL’ has been airing since 1975, so Gaga has a penchant for appearing on some of the most beloved shows on the small screen.

The Mother Monster’s episode is called ‘Lisa Goes Gaga’ and Gaga factors into the plot as someone who comes to Springfield in order to cheer up little Lisa, who is often the voice of reason on the show.

The Telegraph reports that Gaga has mused about her role on the show, saying, “I play a little bit of a slut. The apple doesn’t fall far from my artistic tree.”

Uh oh. Is Gaga going to be a bad influence on the sweet and wholesome Lisa Simpson? Will she teach her how to dance? Will she whip Bart into shape? Will she give Marge hair tips? Will she eat donuts with Homer? The possibilities are endless.

The exact air date of the season finale of ‘The Simpsons’ has not yet been confirmed, but it should air sometime in May. PopCrush will certainly recap the episode for you, dear reader!

A musical play based on Whitney Houston‘s 1992 film ‘The Bodyguard’ is currently in the works, reports The Guardian. Producers from the Adelphia Theatre in London are developing the stage production about a blossoming relationship between a popular singer Rachel Marron and her bodyguard (played by Kevin Costner in the film).

Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer Heather Headley will portray the Rachel character which Houston played in the movie. The play is expected to bow for London audiences in November.

The musical will also feature some of Houston’s biggest songs from the film’s soundtrack including the centerpiece ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Veteran director Thea Sharrock will helm the musical, which will have a book written by playwright Alex Dinelaris.

The project has been in pre-production for over a year, way before the late pop icon’s unexpected death. Obviously, since her passing, interest in the play has peaked.

Casting for other roles including the bodyguard character are still ongoing. No word if the London musical will travel its way to the U.S. shores on Broadway.

The world is filled with terrible news, so it’s nice for us to find a story with a happy ending once in awhile.  Not that type of happy ending. Pervert. Here is an amazing story about a Swedish man who was stranded in a snow drift for 61 days.

Snowmobilers came across the car thinking it was wreckage. They peeked inside to find someone wrapped in a sleeping bag in the back seat.  Rescuers dug the 45-year-old man out of the car, and he was so weak he could hardly speak–yet alone explain what happened.  He said he’s been in the car since December 19th. Probably hiding out so he didn’t have to buy his family Christmas gifts. The man survived by eating snow and icicles.

Humans can last up to four weeks without food, so its plausible that the man was stranded for as long as he said he was.  His body temperature was around 31 degrees Celsius when he was brought into the hospital.  With his body temperature so low, he wasn’t using much energy.  This also helped him to survive. Like bears, humans can also go into a dormant-like state (especially during football season).

Whitney Houston may have had one of the most recognizable voices in pop music, which brought her great success, fame and fortune. Apparently, the singer’s financial resources may have dwindled down to almost nothing, since her family sold footage of her celebrity-attended funeral to a variety of global media outlets.

Apparently, the family elected to sell the footage in order to raise money for the singer’s sole heir, daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18. That’s why it would seem that Houston didn’t leave much behind.

The funeral took place on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Houston’s Newark, N.J. hometown. She was eulogized by her ‘The Bodyguard’ co-star Kevin Costner and serenaded by Alicia Keys. The funeral aired on CNN and several online outlets via The Associated Press, but all footage was offline and non-viewable the very next day.

A spokesperson for the family told TMZ that the executors of Houston’s estate “agreed to license footage to several media outlets for customary fees.” Those “customary fees” are being set aside to “maximize the estate for the benefit of Bobbi Kristina.”

Hmm, that sounds like jargon-heavy way to say that Houston was broke and/or didn’t leave much behind for her only child in terms of money. Why else would the family need to sell private footage on Bobbi Kris’ behalf?

At least this money-making endeavor is for a good cause, since Bobbi Kris is in a lot of pain over the loss of her mother at such a young age; Houston was just 48. However, an auction of Houston items is set for next month, and that feels a little tacky and entirely too soon after the pop diva’s death, even though the auction house claims that their sale is helping to preserve the singer’s legacy and history.

Yeah, there’s a better way to preserve Houston’s legacy and history. Those are called albums.

Some kids just get grounded when they disobey their parents. But in Memphis, TN, this young lady had to stand on a busy corner holding a sign that said, “I steal from my family” as a punishment.

Natia Wade has been in trouble before for stealing things, but perhaps now she will think before she does it again. The 13-year-old has never stolen anything huge, mostly insignificant items from her mom. This time, she stole her mom’s debit card to use it to reactivate her cell phone, which her mother had taken away.

That was the last straw for her parents. As her punishment, she was forced to stand outside on a busy street corner and hold the handmade “I steal from my family” sign. Her aunt stood on the corner with her, but she supported the punishment.

She said, “Don’t get me wrong, because you never want to put your child in this situation because they’re fragile. But with all of the things that are going on with kids stealing things and all the crime being committed in Memphis, she will not be one of them.”

Public shaming seems to be a new trend in parenting. Just last week, this father found his daughter’s insolent rant about him on Facebook and punished her by videotaping himself shooting her laptop with a round of hollow-point bullets. If this is the kind of punishment they feel is necessary, we are happy to be entertained by it.

Kevin Coster, who starred opposite Whitney Houston in the 1992 smash ‘The Bodyguard,’ will speak at Houston’s funeral this coming Saturday, according to PEOPLE.

The movie, which was Houston’s first starring role, was a mega-hit, earning more than $400 million at the box office internationally. Its soundtrack sold a staggering 42 million copies worldwide and spawned five hit singles, including Houston’s signature song ‘I Will Always Love You.’

Houston’s longtime mentor Clive Davis will also speak and Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder will sing at a private ceremony held in Houston’s hometown of Newark, New Jersey. Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown, Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys and Dionne Warwick are expected to attend as well.

Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills, California hotel room on Feb. 11. Cause of death is still pending investigation by police. She was 48-years-old.

The king cake is a traditional Mardi Gras food. It is usually a ring-shaped pastry, sometimes filled with cheese or jelly and sprinkled with the colors of Mardi Gras. It began as an Epiphany treat, celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men to the stable where Jesus was born. Oh, and it’s delicious.

The king cake tradition was brought to New Orleans by French and Spanish settlers who associated it with the Mardi Gras carnival. A dessert synonymous with celebrations definitely belonged with Mardi Gras and has been shared during the festive season ever since.

The secret of the king cake is that there is always a small trinket, often a plastic baby representing the Baby Jesus, baked inside that one lucky eater is bound to bite into. Of course, the lucky person who gets the baby in the cake gets special privileges, but is also usually responsible for bringing the next cake.

Chris Brown isn’t known for his gender sensitivity and Us Weekly aren’t known for their reliable reporting, so when the two sides came together earlier this week, the result was one of the more eyebrow-raising rumors we’ve heard in awhile: an unnamed woman claimed that Brown asked for her number and used “I promise I won’t beat you” as his pickup line. Brown says the whole thing is untrue, however.

“That is absurd and absolutely not true,” said Brown in a statement. “I did not say that nor would I joke about that.” His denial follows comments from his PR rep, who told reporters, “I’d be surprised if Chris said something like that.”

It’s been a wild week for the quick-tempered Brown, who found himself under fire after angering Grammy viewers who felt his performance during the ceremony was in poor taste and responded by tweeting a profane outburst (since deleted) that basically boiled down to “Neener neener, I have a Grammy and you don’t.”

Brown’s detractors responded by starting a rumor that he’d died — and his own mother reportedly told him to “grow up.”

So yeah, Chris Brown has been in the news a lot lately, and most of the coverage has been decidedly negative. Denying you used one of the worst pickup lines of all time has to be considered a PR victory at this point, right?

The trappings of being the most famous singer in the world are catching up to Adele and she’s not going to take it or allow her good name and image to be sullied.

The singer has quickly launched a lawsuit against French magazine Public after it published photos that it claims were taken from a sex tape featuring the the six-time 2012 Grammy Award winner.

Adele’s lawyer issued a statement to The Daily Mail, which read as follows:

“We are informed that the French magazine Public has today published images which it claims show our client in a sex tape. Our client has not appeared in a sex tape as it claimed in the article. Our client does not appear in the photographs.

Such claims are untrue and grossly defamatory. Our client is taking legal action in relation to this matter.”

Damn. Adele is establishing that you do not want to mess with her. A sex tape so isn’t the singer’s style, either. Tsk, tsk, Public magazine.

The singer has gone on record many times to say that flashing skin and her boobs or having a gimmick is so not what she is about and that she doesn’t want the nonsense that comes with pop superstardom. But sadly, she is not immune to a magazine making false claims and headlines in order to move copies on the back of her name and her massive fame.

Hopefully, this rubbish, to borrow one of Adele’s words, doesn’t soil her joy over scooping up two armfuls of Grammys last weekend in Los Angeles, which was accompanied by her giving the most anticipated and enjoyed performance of the night.

We’re expecting an apology to be issued by Public sooner than later over this media gaffe.

The rumors started when a photo surfaced of a Civil War-era man who bore a remarkably striking resemblance to the star of ‘National Treasure.’

At first, Cage downplayed the idea, even debunking it on a recent ‘Letterman’ appearance. “I have gotten out of bed in the morning and looked in the mirror just to make sure I was still there, and I was, so that would probably end those rumors,” he said.

But then, he admits there’s a chance he could be a member of the undead. “It’s possible. I don’t make a habit out of drinking people’s blood, though,” he said.

Nice try, Nic. But we’re not entirely sure we believe you. Anybody catch the color of the liquid that Cage is drinking from a glass? That’s right. It’s red.

Julie Fay with the Calcasieu parish Police Jury sent us a note on what will happen for people how have Parish garbage and trash pickup.

Police Jury offices will be closed in observance of President’s Day, Monday February 20th, and Mardi Gras, Tuesday, February 21st. All Parish offices will re-open Wednesday, February 22nd.

Residential trash collection providers will remain on normal schedules during this period.

The City of Lake Charles sent this out as well about the garbage and trash pickup for the City.

The City of Lake Charles will observe the Mardi Gras Holiday on Tuesday, February 21.  There will be no trash or garbage pickup on that day.  Trash and garbage normally picked up on Tuesday will be rescheduled for pickup on Wednesday, February 22.

Monday, Thursday and Friday routes will remain on their regular schedules.

All other services of the Department of Public Works and other City departments will be closed on Tuesday, February 21 in observance of this Holiday but will resume regular working hours on Wednesday, February 22.

The men ride the rural the countryside stopping at farm houses asking for donations of chickens, rice, onions, or any other donattions for the gumbo that night.In order to get these donations the riders must dance and if a chicken is donated they must catch it.

The Capitaine is the man in charge of the run and he maintains control over the Mardi Gras. He issues instructions to the riders as they make their way on the run. When they arrive at a farm house, he obtains permission to enter private property, after which the riders may charge toward the house,

After the run ends the women begin cooking the gumbo, there is eating and more dancing and it all comes to an end at midnight because Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season.

AT&T Wireless customers with unlimited data plans are crying foul over a policy that seemingly punishes the heaviest users, throttling their download speeds to a snail’s pace.

Those considered among the top five percent of data users in their areas are being affected by a new AT&T policy that cuts those people’s data speeds to manage usage on the wireless networks — reducing download speeds by up to 99 percent.

Translation? A web page that normally takes about a second to load could take upwards of almost two minutes.

AT&T has roughly 17 million customers on “unlimited data” plans. It stopped offering those plans as an option for new customers in 2010, and warned last year that it would start slowing speeds for people deemed the heaviest data users.

And it doesn’t take much to trigger it — many are saying they’ve been throttled after using less than what the wireless provider allots customers on its “limited” plans. What’s more, they report that when they’ve called AT&T to complain, customer service reps have suggested they switch to one of those limited plans instead.

“They’re coaxing you toward the tiered plan,” said Gregory Tallman in Hopatcong, N.J., who’s received texts from AT&T warning that he’s approaching his limit after using just 1.5 gigabytes of data in a billing cycle — half of the 3 gigabytes of data offered in a tiered plan for the same price as his unlimited plan.

Some customers are so upset that they’re considering switching carriers. Verizon also throttles its top 5 percent of users, but only if the cell tower they’re connected to is congested at the moment. When things clear up, speeds return to normal — but once AT&T throttles someone’s usage, it stays slow for the entire billing cycle.

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said the company doesn’t actually throttle everyone in its top 5 percent of “unlimited” data users, only those in areas where the wireless network is congested that month. He said only 0.5 percent of customers, or about 200,000 people, were affected in January.

He also pointed out heavy data users can avail themselves of one of AT&T’s 30,000 Wi-Fi hotspots — where usage is unmetered.

Technically, AT&T isn’t in breach of contract. They’re still providing unlimited data usage to throttled customers, even if the speeds are so slow that the phone is basically useless for anything but phone calls and texting.

“They just guaranteed the highway,” Tallman conceded. “They didn’t guarantee the speed limit.”

Talk about eerie coincidences. Just one day before superstar pop diva Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton during 2012 Grammy Awards festivities, her daughter Bobbi Kristina also fell asleep. In a tub. On the same floor. In the same hotel.

The thought is terrifying, especially considering what happened to Houston. It’s also scary since Bobbi Kristina went to the hospital twice after her mother’s death, reportedly mixing sedatives and alcohol to numb her tremendous pain.

The most recent reports indicate that Bobbi Kristina’s family fears she is suicidal. The poor girl. Our hearts break for her.

TMZ reports that on Friday night (Feb. 10), the teen’s friends knocked on the door of her hotel room, which was booked under her mother’s name, multiple times, but BK did not answer. The friends then called security to unlock the door and to help get her out of the tub. Yikes.

Again, we send our thoughts and prayers out to Bobbi Kristina, 18, as she deals with this tragedy. Judging from this incident and the fact that she reportedly mixed pills and alcohol in the wake of Houston’s death means she is on a similar path as her mother. Hopefully her father Bobby Brown can get control of this situation because we don’t want to see Bobbi Kristina suffer the same fate as her much-missed mother.

It’s true! The largest recorded flash mob pillow fight took place on March 22, 2008, during which people in 25 cities around the globe participated.

While this pillow fight flash mob in San Jose isn’t nearly as big, it sure looks mighty entertaining. After a call for participants went out over Facebook and Twitter, hundreds of people — including several in Santa suits and one man wearing a horse mask — converged on San Jose City Hall this past Sunday and beat the heck out of each other with pillows.

Needless to say, feathers were everywhere.
